Gov. DeSantis tells unemployed to Start Looking for a Job

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has one message for the unemployed: start looking for a job.

DeSantis listed a requirement that forced people to look for work while collecting benefits during a time when unemployment was rising, but few businesses were hiring because of the pandemic. However, DeSantis has now lifted many restrictions on businesses and they should be hiring again, as people should be looking for work again.

The governor does this in hopes to reduce benefits and get people back to the workforce. It should be noted that Florida’s unemployment rate is lower than the national average, per a report on CBS who also stated a quote from DeSantis:

“Normally when you’re getting unemployment, the whole idea is that’s temporary, and you need to be looking for work to be able to get off unemployment,” DeSantis said at a news conference on Wednesday. “It was a disaster, so we suspended those job search requirements. I think it’s pretty clear now, we have an abundance of job openings.”

He said May will be the last month people can collect benefits without looking for a new job.

DeSantis says the demand for work is there and businesses want to hire more people, and they should be able to fulfill those needs soon.

His comments might end up criticized by Democrats who are likely to call this insensitive and a rush back to the workforce, because a lot of Democrats are not fans of DeSantis and his Republican values such as working hard.
